Our Sustainability Platform ensures that all materials will continue to be produced in an increasingly environmentally responsible manner.

Environmental issues are becoming top priority with consumers, designers, brand owners, government agencies and publishing houses.

At Holliston, we’re dedicated to producing the highest-quality material through environmentally sustainable processes. Our cover materials are composed primarily of cotton and paper (pulp from well-managed forests), vegetable starches and solvent-free coatings. They’re all-natural, and renewable on a yearly basis. Additionally, we use water based colorants and organic based fillers, which helps keep environmental impact to a minimum.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY PLATFORM IS BASED ON FOUR KEY POINTS

Sustainable Raw Material

The key to Holliston, LLC’s sustainability can be found in the name of its primary product: cotton cloth material.

Cotton is grown in well-stewarded farmlands, employing the latest hybrid seed technologies which require minimal use of irrigation, herbicides, and pesticides. Even in the past 10 years, these technologies have greatly reduced our environmental impact.

But cotton’s biggest advantage is evident every spring. That’s because a new crop grows every year, as opposed to trees, which require upwards of 30 years to reach maturity. By switching to cotton for packaging and book cover materials, we can ensure consistent harvests, sustainable products, and a higher level of environmental responsibility. Cotton also offers a more sophisticated appearance, more luxurious feel, and more durable and age-resistant material.

Water-Based Colorants and Coatings

Producing highly engineered products in a sustainable way remains a challenge for most manufacturers. Consumers demand environmentally friendly products that still exhibit superior performance. Holliston, LLC’s 100-year legacy of innovation, active research, and development allows us to meet this cross-cutting demand.

To add unique coloring to our cloth and fabric coverings, we employ a wide array of organic and eco-friendly colorants. To add strength, flexibility, and create a unique feel and texture for our product family, we add all-natural wheat, potato, or cotton starch to the raw cotton material.

Currently, more than 90% of our products are produced with water-based (or aqueous) coatings and colorants. Between 1991 and 2005, this practice reduced the amount of generated hazardous waste by 88%. Not surprisingly, we will continue to employ these eco-friendly components in future manufacturing.

Award-Winning Wastewater Treatment

In 2004 & 2005, the Kentucky-Tennessee Water Environment Federation officially awarded Holliston, LLC, certificates of merit for its zero-violation track record. This award was the result of our ongoing commitment to wastewater treatment improvement and our continuous dedication to reducing our environmental impact.

We are proud to win such an esteemed award, but the real reward is knowing that we’re helping to protect such beautiful and pristine surroundings.

Investing in the Future

We not only believe in Environmental Stewardship, we practice it and live it. And even though we’ve made great progress, we’re not sitting still.

As part of our Sustainability Platform, we are committed to further reducing our environmental footprint through the following practices:

  • Developing 100% recyclable products
  • Developing new products that feature exclusively water-based coatings and colorants
  • Creating innovative new chemistries for next-generation coatings and recovery
  • Composting procedures for all scrap material
  • Continual improvement in all sustainability areas

Holliston, LLC’s campus is home to a welcoming environment that fosters herds of deer, flocks of turkey, and supports one of the best fishing rivers in the U.S.

We’re proud of the area we live in, and we’ll do everything we can to protect it.

The bottom line is that sustainable practices are good for the planet and good for our customers. And at Holliston, LLC, we're committed exceeding those expectations.
